C-SCAN – CORROSION MAPPING

ULTRASOUND EXAM A/B/C/D Scan FOR DETECTION, SIZING AND MAPPING OF THICKNESS LOSS.

Nowadays, the Market offers B-Scan scanning, which does not include probe or C-Scan scanning which present some limitations of productivity and access to all regions of interest.

Araujo Engenharia acquired equipment and developed new applications for detection, sizing and mapping of thickness loss through ABCD –Scan ultrasound exam.

This service is the solution for detection and sizing of thinning in plates and welds. It puts together productivity and versatility of AB-Scan scanning (Welds and Plates) with the accuracy of register and sizing of C–Scan (it includes B, C, D and 3D views).

The Service develops initially with the AB-Scan scanning, which allows access to all regions of interest and also to the welds.

The corroded regions are “mapped” with C-Scan, allowing sizing to calculations and register to follow-up of evolution. Automatic and manual autonomous scanners are used. They are fed by batteries and reservoirs for coupling (water).

The example below shows a Step Block in some possible visualizations.

The inspection of regions where the AB Scan manual exam detected thickness loss is complemented by exams with scanners which make C Scan + 3D views possible. The result is an accurate mapping of areas with thickness loss. The automatic scanners and tools used are totally independent of power source, they operate with battery.

The pictures below show the thickness loss detected and mapped with semi-automatic scanner use which provides high speed scanning and precision sizing.

In order to facilitate the interpretation of results, 3D drawings and sketches are done with numbered  examined plates.

The regions of major interest can be analysed with all resources of software, facilitating the interpretation of results and generating information and didactics illustration  to the inspection report.
